Low-key Mayweather thanks God for making fight possible
LAS VEGAS—This was definitely not the Floyd Mayweather Jr. that we are used to.
The flamboyant American, known for his brash attitude and money-flaunting ways, was a picture of surprising humility Wednesday afternoon after taking the podium in the final press conference for his mammoth match against Filipino ring icon Manny Pacquiao on Saturday.
In fact, Mayweather pulled a page from the Pacquiao book of public speaking and opened his speech by thanking God, before going to acknowledge the support Filipinos have been giving support to Pacquiao.
“First of all, I wanna thank God,” Mayweather said. “God made all of this possible.”
Mayweather and Pacquiao face off on May 2 at MGM Grand here, a welterweight unification bout that is expected to be the highest grossing fight of all time by far.
Mayweather, who has been part of some of the biggest fights in history, even admitted he was in awe of the interest his showdown with Pacquiao has drawn.
“This has been a truly amazing turnout,” he said.
