Ateneo, La Salle triumph

Ateneo and La Salle-Zobel demolished their respective rivals and advanced to the quarterfinal round of the 8th Smart-Philippine Chinese Amateur Basketball League Freego Cup Thursday at the Philippine Buddhacare Academy gym in Quezon City.

With Gian Mamuyac presiding over Ateneo’s torrid start, the Eaglets romped to a 92-59 win over the University of Perpetual Help Altalettes for their fifth straight win in as many outings in Group A elims.

The win was a fitting sequel to the team’s 79-43 drubbing of AMA University last Tuesday.

Emboldened by their 70-48 win over the FEU Baby Tamaraws also last Tuesday, the Junior Archers also outclassed the Chiang Kai Shek College Dragons, 84-56, to keep abreast with the Eaglets in the tournament presented by Freego and backed by Plastic Linoleum, Hapee Toothpaste, Insular Square (Cebu), Fed Seal, K TechSports Inc., and New Pioneer Auto Supply (Cebu).

Aljun Melencio starred in those wins by La Salle-Zobel by scoring 21 and 24 points, respectively, to win the Freego Player of the Game awards.

Also securing berths to the next round were University of the Philippines-Integrated School and Arellano University.

The Junior Chiefs notched their fifth win in six games in Group A with a 94-76 victory over the Letran Squires while the Junior Maroons tripped the AMA Junior Titans, 86-76.
