Everyone lived up to the hype as Frankie Edgar prevailed over Urijah Faber with a unanimous decision win in the main event of UFC Fight Night Manila Sunday early morning at Mall of Asia Arena.
Edgar was the one who basically dictated the pace of the match and took a convincing decision with all three judges scoring the fight 50-45.
It was pretty much an all-stand-up match until Edgar made a successful takedown in the third round.
Edgar said his win in Manila would be a statement as he hopes to get a title shot.
“I want to go out there and make a statement,” Edgar said as he improved to 18-4-1 and is currently ranked as the no. 2 contender for the featherweight title.
He added that he has all the respect for Faber who ushered in the lighter divisions in the UFC.
“Urijah is a legend in our sport. I’ve looked up to him when I got here.”
Edgar managed to pin Faber to the cage wall in the fourth round and he landed a couple of right punches straight to the face of Faber.
Faber’s record fell to 32-8.
As for the night award went, the preliminary card had the Fight of the Night and Performance of the Night.
Jon Delos Reyes and Roldan Sancha-an’s gripping fast-paced bout was awarded as Fight of the Night while Jon Tuck and Neil Magny were awarded the Performance of the Night.
All four fighters who got the award will receive $50,000 each.
