Perpetual Help and University of the East slipped past separate opponents to secure quarterfinal berths in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup Wednesday at Filoil Flying V Arena.
Nigerian center Bright Akhuetie unleashed season-high numbers as the Altas survived St. Benilde’s late run, 81-78, to claim a share of top spot at 6-1 in Group A.
The 6-foot-8 Akhuetie dropped a record double-double of 35 points and 20 rebounds on top of three assists, a steal and a block to power the Altas.
The Warriors also gained a piece of the lead in Group B at 6-1 following a 70-67 decision of University of the Philippines.
In the other Group B match, University of Santo Tomas turned back Southwestern U, 66-59, to stay in the quarterfinal hunt with a 4-3 record.
