After being dropped from the Philippine team lineup for the World Cup qualifiers, Azkal James Younghusband said his omission would only make him one thing—stronger.
In an interview with CNN Philippines’ “Sports Desk,” Younghusband said he regarded his removal from the lineup as a “challenge.”
“This is the third time I’ve been dropped. I’ve been (dropped) twice before that and I’ve always bounced back,” he said.
The Azkal midfielder said he had no hard feelings over national team coach Thomas Dooley, adding he was informed of the omission before the news broke out.
“I got a call actually from coach about two weeks ago before the squad was announced (on May 25). I appreciate his call and letting me know before I found out publicly,” he said.
Citing Dooley’s call, Younghusband said the influx of new talent was the reason for the snub: “He just let me know that there’s some new players coming in and that I won’t be involved this time,” he said.
Despite the snub, Younghusband said he would still be supporting the team as they go against Bahrain at Philippine Sports Stadium on June 11.
“It’s going to be a good game to watch, and I’ll be there to support the boys,” he added. RC
