Leo Austria: Tim Cone just the man Ginebra needs
Amid the coaching carousel that has struck the San Miguel Corporation teams, the lone squad which was unaffected by the changes said that it just sets the table for a more exciting 41st season in the PBA.
San Miguel coach Leo Austria welcomed the news of Tim Cone being named as the new Ginebra coach and Jason Webb being tasked to handle the reins for Star, and noted that it’s really a move which he thinks can elevate the Beermen’s sister teams.
“I think that’s a welcome development. Everybody wants to have a better team,” he said.

Austria also placed an emphasis on the Cone appointment to the Gin Kings, and said that the move is a signal that the top brass for San Miguel is hell-bent to end the title drought for the crowd favorites.
“Ginebra needs someone they respect, and the management definitely had their man in Coach Tim,” he said.

And with the recent moves, he knows that the competition next season will just be as stiff, and it wouldn’t be an easy task for San Miguel to defend their Philippine Cup and Governors’ Cup titles.
“It’s not easy to handle a team. Even in our team, there were struggles. You could see that even though your team is the strongest on paper, in the court, you’re still not complete. So you really have to put an emphasis on continued development if you want to remain competitive in this league,” said Austria.
“That’s the challenge for us next season.” IDL
