Phoenix Am Open coming

PHOENIX Petroleum Philippines, Inc. will stage the inaugural Phoenix Premium 98 Amateur Open series next month to give golfers a regular venue to raise their level of play.

The three-leg series, a project of Phoenix Philippines Foundation, also seeks to discover new talents.

To raise the level of competition, the tournament will have an Open Division for players with very low handicap indices, ensuring top-notch competition.

“We want to do our part in helping Philippine golf,” said Phoenix VP for external affairs Raymond Zorrilla. “The sport’s growth, local and regional, has been immense and Phoenix wants to encourage the kids to participate.”

Zorrilla also said Phoenix has been supporting other sports quietly and its first serious foray into amateur golf will commence with the opening leg at Cebu Country Club on Aug. 14. The Manila Southwoods leg follows on Sept. 18.

The series will culminate on Oct. 16 at Beverly Place, which opened its second nine holes early this year.

The tour’s outstanding amateurs could be given sponsorship by Phoenix.

“The Phoenix Philippines Foundation is ready to help if he or she is good to be in the national team,” Zorrilla said.
