The Lady Tamaraws relied on guest players Jovelyn Gonzaga and Honey Royse Tubino to frustrate the Lady Maroons, who fell to fourth spot in Group A with a 2-2 record.

Later, the Tigresses smashed Technological Institute of the Philippines, 25-16, 25-19, 24-26, 25-14, to secure their berth in the next round.

With EJ Laure on the firing end, the Tigresses kept TIP at bay, before pouring it on in the fourth set. The loss put TIP’s quarterfinal bid in peril after it fell to 1-3.

Laure, who was celebrating her 18th birthday, flashed a solid game and fired 18 hits while Pam Lastimosa and Chlodia Cortez chipped in 14 and 10, respectively for the Tigresses, who notched their third win in four games.

The Lady Tamaraws left little to chance as their guest players who were loaned from Army got into their rhythm early to set the tone for the rout.

Gonzaga led all hitters with 19 including 14 on kills and three on blocks while Tubino scattered nine points for the Lady Tamaraws who also drew 11 hits from Toni Rose Basas.

In the third game, National University whipped Polytechnic University of the Philippines, 25-15, 25-18, 25-15.

“They carried us through again,” said FEU coach Shaq delos Santos referring to the Gonzaga-Tubino tandem.
