On the basketball court, LeBron James has taken many of his defenders to school. But off the floor, the two-time NBA champion is reportedly going to take more people to school by offering free college education to more than 1,000 students.
The LeBron James Family Foundation, in coordination with other companies, will cover the tuition cost of the University of Akron an amount that could be near $42 million, as per Scott Stump of “Today.”
“At this rate, we’ve got 1,100 kids in our program, and if I can put 1,100 kids into college free, that means I’ll have done something, (and) the University of Akron, JPMorgan and Chase and my foundation have done something great to give back,” James told Willie Geist of Today.
“It’s the type of commitment that can change the lives of a lot of families, and James said he’s happy to help whenever possible,” an article on Bleacher Report said.
“These kids are everything,” said the four-time MVP James, who went straight from St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in Akron to the NBA as the top overall pick in the 2003 Draft.RAM
