PNP, NHA down UNTV rivals

Former University of the East player Ollan Omiping exploded for 26 points as Philippine National Police kicked off its title bid with a 97-63 trouncing of Government Service Insurance System in the 4th UNTV Cup held last week at Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig.

The 6-foot Omiping, who played alongside James Yap during their UE days in the UAAP, outscored the entire GSIS squad in the opening quarter, accounting for 15 of the team’s 33 points as against only 11 for the Furies.

The Furies never recovered from there as the Responders also drew 20 points from Antonio Tolentino to complete their dominant Group B win.

Two other matches were decided only in the closing minutes with Season 2 champion Armed Forces of the Philippines outlasting Bureau of Fire Protection, 74-70, in Group B.

Also getting off to a fine start in the annual tournament for public servants was National Housing Authority which outsteadied Department of Justice, 85-79, in another Group A match.

A brainchild of UNTV CEO and president Daniel Razon, the tournament offers P2 million to the champion with the prize going to the team’s chosen charity.
