Cormier offers title shot to reinstated Jones
On the heels of his reinstatement by the UFC, beleaguered fighter Jon Jones just got presented with a shortcut as he makes his way back to the top.
UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier is willing to give Jones a shot at his belt, the same title “Bones” got stripped off early in the year after getting involved in a road mishap.
Talking to UFC Tonight, Cormier said a rematch would be a treat and as champion he doesn’t mind if Jones goes straight for the title shot instead of fighting the top contenders in the division.
“If Jones beat me in January and he said, ‘Daniel you have to earn your way back to a rematch,’ I would have fought the two best guys in the division (Anthony) ‘Rumble’ Johnson and Alexander Gustafsson, to get back there,” Cormier said as per Bleacher Report. “If Jones was still the champion, I would have earned that rematch.”
Jones put Cormier on the losers’ column on their match in January which saw a pre-match melee happen during media day.
In April, however, Jones was stripped of his title following his arrest on hit-and-run charges.
“The thing is, I’m the champion now and I want to fight him. I am willing to give him a title shot immediately back into the UFC. It’s great for the fans, great for the organization because he is pound-for-pound the best fighter in the world,” said Cormier, who lost to Jones via unanimous decision at UFC 182.
