Few players could rival what San Sebastian volleyball standout Gretchel Soltones has accomplished as a 20-year-old player.
A member of the national team that saw action in the 2015 Southeast Asian Games last June, the Cebu-born spiker also represented the country in the Asian Under-23 Championship early this year.
She emerged as the country’s finest player, improving each year since joining San Sebastian four years ago.
But more than her accolades, Soltones is driven by the thought that she makes her father, Marvin, proud.
The elder Soltones, a businessman and security guard, is based in Catmon, Cebu, but he makes it a point to follow his daughter’s games, particularly in the Shakey’s V-League Reinforced Conference, on television.
“I keep Papa posted on everything happening in my volleyball career,” Soltones said. “His first question is always if my upcoming games will be telecast, so I also supply him with the schedule of all my televised games.”
The Business Management senior recently helped the PLDT Ultra-Fast Spikers win in four sets over the University of the Philippines, 25-12, 22-25, 25-15, 25-17, a game her father watched on television.
Soltones said stints in commercial leagues has allowed her to help her father financially.
