A tournament filled with uncertainty ended in a blaze of glory for crowd darling Alyssa Valdez over the weekend.

The Ateneo volleyball superstar delivered when it mattered as PLDT Home Ultera swept Army for the Shakey’s V-League Season 12 Reinforced Conference crown Sunday night at Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

Valdez was doubtful for the championship series after a back injury sidelined her early in the tournament. She also had to get clearance from Ateneo to play in the finals.

But with thousands showing up at the arena just to watch her play, Valdez came up with superb performances that also earned her the finals Most Valuable Player award.

“This is for the fans,” Valdez said, dedicating her performance to the adoring throng.

“I’m deeply, deeply grateful for their loyalty and undying support.”

The victory also gave PLDT its second title this year after the Open Conference crown where Valdez was also adjudged MVP. PLDT coach Roger Gorayeb also achieved a milestone, posting a first-ever grand slam of sorts, after guiding National U to the V-League collegiate title early this year as well as PLDT in the Open and Reinforced tournaments.

Shakey’s V-League organizers expect an even bigger season next year.

“We are now starting the ground work for a grander 13th season next year,” said Ricky Palou, president of Sports Vision.
