Jarencio on former coach Jacobs: ‘He was an influencer’

A former pupil of famed head coach Ron Jacobs expressed support to the coach’s family on Friday.

“Deepest condolences to the family of coach Ron,” Globalport head coach Pido Jarencio said Friday after his Batang Pier beat the Barako Bull Energy, 94-85, to advance into the next phase of the 2016 Philippine Cup Playoffs.

Jarencio was a player of Jacobs in the 1983 and 1985 Northern Consolidated Cement teams, the precursor to the Gilas program, which won gold medals at the Southeast Asian Games.

Like the many individuals who were fortunate enough to have come across Jacobs, Jarencio said the former San Miguel Beer mentor had a huge impact in his life and basketball career.

“I had many coaches, but he was an influencer,” Jarencio said. “He was a disciplinarian to us.”
