University of the Philippines started its campaign in the UAAP Season 78 women’s volleyball tournament in commanding fashion as it dismantled University of the East, 25-20, 25-13, 25-21, Sunday at San Juan Arena.

As dominating as the Lady Maroons were, they still could’ve played a better game especially in closing out their opponents with the Lady Warriors putting up a fight in the third set.

Luckily for the Lady Maroons it was Dana Disquitado of UE that would give them the win when her final serve went out.

Despite the win, Lady Maroons head coach Jerry Yee said there’s still much room for improvement after his team committed 22 errors.

“Ang dami naming errors (We had a lot of errors),” Yee said. “But that’s to be expected because they are still rookies and the arena is packed. I hope next game we’ll play better.”

University of the Philippines relied on its troika of rookies in Diana Carlos, Maria Molde, and Justine Dorog.

Carlos and Dorog scored nine points apiece while Molde had five in their UAAP debut.

Veterans Nicole Tiamzon and Kathy Bersola pitched in nine and seven points, respectively for UP.

Maria Shaya Adorador paced UE with seven points.
