Miami Heat guard Beno Udrih will undergo surgery on his right foot and is expected to miss three months, the NBA club announced Wednesday.

The 33-year-old Slovenian suffered a torn plantar plate in his foot in Miami’s 101-93 overtime victory over Indiana on Monday and an MRI exam Tuesday revealed the need for surgery.

Unless the Heat should manage to reach the NBA Finals, Udrih would not recover in time to return until next season.

In 36 games for Miami this season, Udrih has averaged 4.4 points, 2.5 assists, 1.8 rebounds and 16.3 minutes a game while shooting 43.4 percent from the field as the backup to countryman Goran Dragic.

Udrih is an 11-year NBA veteran who previously played for the San Antonio Spurs, Sacramento Kings, Milwaukee Bucks, Orlando Magic and New York Knicks. In 792 career games, he has averaged 8.5 points, 3.4 assists and 2.1 rebounds.

At 32-24, the Heat lead the Southeast division by two games over Atlanta. Miami has the third-best record in the Eastern Conference, trailing only Cleveland and Toronto.
