Chicano, Abad snare Powerman medals

NATIONAL team standouts John Chicano and Mirasol Abad clinched podium finishes in the World Series 2016 Powerman Asia Duathlon Championships Malaysia in Putrajaya last Sunday.

Chicano captured a silver behind Australian champion Thomas Bruin  in the elite men’s division of the 10K run-60K bike-10K run with a time of two hours, 39 minutes and 19 seconds.  Bruin prevailed in 2:35:53.

Abad also took home a bronze with a 3:15:40 clocking in the women’s side behind United Kingdom’s Emma Pooley (2:57:27) and Japan’s Airi Sawada (3:13:40).

Pooley was a 2012 London Olympic silver medalist in cycling’s road time trial.

Several other Filipinos crashed inside the top 10 of the grueling duathlon race that drew 1,137 competitors from 41 countries.

Robeno Javier checked in at 2:46:25 to finish fourth in the men’s elite, followed by Robinson Esteves (2:48:21) and Joey de los Reyes (2:50:57).

Miscelle Gilbuena also fell just a rung short of a podium finish in the distaff side with a 3:17:13 posting, while Cipriane John Topia landed fourth in the 25-29 age group. 

The race kicked off at Putrajaya’s iconic Palace of Justice.  The Powerman Short category featured the 10K run-60K bike-10K run event while there were also contests in the two-man Powerman Classic Relay and three-man Corporate Sprint.  Jasmine W. Payo
