Czech wrestler Petr Novak tests positive for meldonium

PRAGUE — Czech wrestler Petr Novak has tested positive for meldonium, the first such case in the country.

Czech Wrestling Federation spokesman Petr Vurbs says Novak failed an out-of-competition test in January during training for Olympic qualifying with the Czech national team.

Novak finished 11th at the 2014 world championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, in men’s Greco-Roman wrestling.

Meldonium has been banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency since Jan. 1. The drug increases blood flow, which improves exercise capacity by carrying more oxygen to muscle tissue.

Maria Sharapova was among those caught using it.
