Pirates whip Tyrants, seize flag football title

BANNERED by members of the national side, Team Pirates clobbered De La Salle University Tyrants, 36-6, Sunday to clinch the title in the Flag Day five-a-side tournament of the Philippine Flag Football League (PFFL) at Claret School field in Quezon City.

Mon Borromeo scored on two tries for 14 points, while Ross Denopol and Cole Piscano also played key roles in the victory for the Pirates who were skippered by Justin Gunnacao.

A total of 10 teams, including two school-based squads, saw action in the one-day tournament backed by Busan Universal Rail, Inc.

“We didn’t expect to win with a wide margin, but we are thankful for the opportunity to play in these pocket tournaments,” said Gunnacao.

Paul Le, the PFFL president, said the tournament is aimed at further developing the sport, which has already 3,000 players in the country.

“It’s one of those sports where the Filipinos can crack the top 10 in the world since its not height specific, physique and even gender-centered sport and relies on agility, speed and skill,” said Le. Cedelf P. Tupas
