For Top Rank big boss Bob Arum, all talks of a Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor mega fight are nothing but bluff.
The Top Rank chief believes the undefeated American boxers is merely fueling the rumors to stay relevant.
“I think Mayweather is using it to keep current,” he said in an interview with BoxingScene.com.
“I mean, look, these guys can either fight with MMA rules in which case its no contest because Mayweather will get pinned. Or they can fight boxing in which case it’s a no contest because this guy isn’t a boxer and Floyd will destroy him.”
Talks of a possible duel between the retired undefeated boxer and the UFC featherweight champion gained steam last week as both parties took part in fueling speculations of staging the dream match.
Weirder things have happened though, and Arum was once at the forefront of an inter-sport showdown before.
He promoted an exhibition match between the legendary Muhammad Ali and Japanese wrestling king Antonio Inoki back in 1976.
Looking back, he could not help but chuckle, sensing similarities between that and the speculative Mayweather-McGregor matchup.
”Yeah, I would say pretty much (it’s the same),” said Arum.
