SG CUP: Global rips Nagaworld, sets up clash with Tampines
SINGAPORE—Filipino club Global set up an intriguing quarterfinal duel with S-League side Tampines Rovers, following a 5-0 demolition of Cambodian side Nagaworld, 5-0, Saturday night in the RHB Singapore Cup.
Japanese winger Hikaru Minegishi got an early brace, while OJ Clarino, Omid Nazari and Daisuke Sato were also on target as Global cruised to victory at Jalan Besar Stadium.
Global also got a stellar performance from goalkeeper Patrick Deyto who had three big saves in the first half to keep Nagaworld at bay.
Ceres-La Salle looks to join Global in the next round as it faces Garena Young Lions on Sunday in the last preliminary round game.
Minegishi opened the scoring in the ninth minute, with a well-struck volley from just inside the box off a cross from Clarino. It was 2-0 a minute later with Minegishi firing from close range after Nazari’s shot hit the post.
Clarino made it 3-0 in the 32nd minute, heading home a corner from Misagh Bahadoran.
Global missed a handful of chances early in the second half before Nazari finally got on the scoresheet in the 77th minute, after getting on the end of Bahadoran’s through ball.
Sato punctuated the victory with a 35-yard rocket in the 85th minute that caught Nagaworld goalkeeper York Ari off his line.
There was still time for Global to carve out one more chance with Bahadoran winning a penalty inside the area. But Ari guessed right, foiling Bahadoran’s attempt.
