Volleyball to be mandatory sport in NCAA starting Season 92

Volleyball will become one of the mandatory sports this upcoming NCAA season.

The league’s Management Committee (Mancom) approved the inclusion of indoor volleyball as one of the sports which requires all member schools to field in a team this Season 92.

NCAA Mancom chairman Jose Mari Lacson of host school San Beda confirmed the development, as volleyball joined basketball, swimming, and athletics as the mandatory sports for the league.

“It’s approved,” he said, as NCAA hopes to further boost the interest for the sport in the country.

But volleyball is not the lone sport which will be required for all member schools.

NCAA is also considering the possibility of making all of the sports mandatory for all members in the future.

“The NCAA’s goal is increase participation, not just in a few sports, but all and the NCAA plans to make it all mandatory sports in the future,” said Mancom member Peter Cayco of Arellano University. “The NCAA started with volleyball first because all schools are already active when it comes to volleyball.”

The 92nd Season of the NCAA tips off on June 25 at Mall of Asia Arena.

Opening ceremonies will be at 12:30 p.m., which will be immediately followed by a basketball tournament doubleheader.

Last year’s Final Four contenders Mapua and Jose Rizal go at it at 2 p.m., followed by the Finals rematch between San Beda and Letran at 4 p.m.
