Lady Maroons sweep Lady Red Spikers in V-League opener

University of the Philippines gave newcomer San Beda a preview of what to expect with a 25-20, 25-17, 25-20 win at the start of the Shakey’s V-League Season 13 Collegiate Conference Saturday at Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig.

Isa Molde showed the way for the Lady Maroons with 15 points, built on 13 hits and two service aces.

Playing in their maiden V-League season, the Lady Red Spikers hung tough, but just couldn’t match the Lady Maroons’ firepower especially without their star spiker Janine Marciano.

Marciano is with the Ateneo Lady Eagles in Guam for exhibition games and volleyball clinics.

UP won’t be back in action until Aug. 8, but head coach Jerry Yee isn’t concerned over the long break and instead, saw the nine-day layoff as an opportunity for his team to further fine-tune its skills.

“Okay lang yon. Rest pero tuloy tuloy ang ensayo,” said Yee, whose team faces College of St. Benilde next.

Francesca Racraquin paced San Beda with 16 points, including an ace that gave the Lady Red Spikers a 12-9 edge in the third set.

The Lady Maroons, however, responded with a 14-5 run.
