BAGUIO—Bernice Olivarez-Ilas matched par 68 worth 54 points yesterday and Sofia Chabon fired 52 as Manila Southwoods-Masters came out on top of the rain-hit opening round of the PAL Ladies Interclub despite missing one player at the Camp John Hay layout here.
Veteran Lora Roberto accounted for 47 as SW-Masters tallied 153 for the day for a four-point lead over old rival Cebu Country Club in the centerpiece Championship Division, which the Carmona-based lasses are shooting to rule for a sixth straight year.
“Any day you come out on top is a good day,” playing skipper Claire Ong said after fielding just three players with Andrea Pineda failing to make it here because of academic requirements back in Manila.
Ong, though, bared that they will come out in full force for today’s second round, with the pro-bound Pauline del Rosario and Mikhaela Fortuna spearheading a crew that will seek to establish a comfortable lead. Kim Yong-mi and Ong will also join SW-Masters today.
“The team also struggled a bit as they found the greens a bit fast to their liking,” said Ong, who is calling the shots for this team for the third year now after taking over from Beachie Abierra.
Crystal Superal-Neri churned out the round of the young tournament in leading Cebu CC to a 149, shooting 57 points after a six-birdie, three-bogey effort.
Irina Gabasa fired 48 and sister Junia accounted for 44 for Cebu CC, which discarded the 34 of Ryoko Nagai.
