After winding up winless in the FIVB Women’s Club World Championship, Philippine representative PSL-F2 Logistics Manila wants a consolation prize it truly deserves.
“We hope that we made you proud,” Jovelyn Gonzaga, her voice cracking, asked local fans after PSL-F2 dropped a straight sets 25-16, 25-23, 25-20 decision to Bangkok Glass yesterday to bring up the rear of the eight-team field at Mall of Asia Arena.
PSL-F2 won just a set in losing all of its five games, but that one brilliant moment came against defending champion Eczacibasi VitrA Istanbul.
Team captain Rachel Anne Daquis said they are generally happy with the performance considering they faced the world’s best clubs with several Olympic medalists in the roster.
Daquis also appealed that the local core of this team be kept intact for the Southeast Asian Games slated in Malaysia next year.
“We started it,” Daquis said, referring to teammates Gonzaga, Jaja Santiago, Mika Reyes, Kim Fajardo and Ces Molina.
“All we need is chance to get invited to play and the chance to have the team formed early,” said Daquis.
Eczacibasi VitrA Istanbul was playing Pomi Casalmaggiore for the title at press time.
Vakifbank Istanbul wore down Volero Zurich, 25-14, 21-25, 25-22, 25-11, for third place.
Earlier, Rexona Sesc Rio overcame stubborn Hisamitsu Springs Kobe, 20-25, 25-22, 25-15, 30-32, 15-7, for fifth place.
