NU Pep squad targets historic ‘six-peat’
After winning a fourth straight UAAP Cheerdance crown, National University has set its sight on pulling off a “six-peat” to eclipse the record made by University of Santo Tomas.
The UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe was an immovable force in the early 2000s, winning the title for five straight years from 2002 to 2006.
“The target really is six-peat and that would really be a remarkable part of history,” said NU Pep Squad coach Ghicka Bernabe.
NU, however, is wary not to look far ahead. But Bernabe is also not the type who shies away from challenges.
“There is pressure every year. Even in our first championship the pressure was already there. And like what I always tell our dancers, let’s embrace the pressure,” Bernabe said.

“But before winning six straight, we need to get to five first and we’ll take it one day at a time,” she added.
With a fourth consecutive championship under its belt, the biggest challenge for NU is to sustain its excellence with other schools improving each year.
“Every year is a very, very challenging year. Everybody will step up and a five-peat will be more challenging [than winning a four-peat],” said team manager Jun Gaw.
