Far Eastern University sent National University reeling to a second straight defeat with a 25-20, 25-13, 22-25, 25-20 win Saturday in the UAAP Season 79 women’s volleyball tournament at Filoil Flying V Centre.
Substitute Kyla Negrito finished things off for the Lady Tamaraws with a drop ball to cap off their 6-1 scoring spurt in the fourth set that sealed the back-to-back victories.
FEU improved to 3-2, after falling to 1-2 early in the season, while the Lady Bulldogs continued to slip with a 3-2 card.
Lady Tamaraws head coach Shaq Delos Santos had an unorthodox way of preparing for NU, benching Toni Rose Basas in their previous game against University of the East.
“Her benching served two purposes because one it was a disciplinary action and the other, we hid her from NU’s scouting reports for our game,” said Delos Santos. “Hopefully she becomes consistent with her scoring.”
It seems Delos Santos gamble paid off as Basas finished with a game-high 20 points, a huge improvement from her 7.5 points average.
Bernadeth Pons and Jerrili Malabanan also finished in double figures for FEU with 18 and 10 points, respectively.
Jaja Santiago had 20 points to lead NU.
FEU brought the fight to NU with the Lady Tamaraws scoring 57 spikes while the Lady Bulldogs mustered just 36.
