SEA Games: Philippines snares 3 more golds

MANILA, Philippines—The Philippines snared three more golds in the 26th Southeast Asian Games Monday but remained in sixth place in the overall standings.

The total number of medal haul as of 6 p.m. Monday improved to 8-12-15 (gold, silver, bronze) with a total of 35, but the country is still trailing behind Indonesia (108 overall medals), Thailand (74), Vietnam (67), Singapore (45) and Malaysia (42).

World No. 1 Dennis Orcollo ruled the 8-ball men’s pool singles event while Margarito Angana wrestled his way to the top of the 55 kg GrecoRoman wrestling competition.

Men’s butler pair of Gerry Alquiros and George Soo made sure the Philippines had no gold drought on day three by acing the Contract bridge, a cards game debuting in the biennial competition this year.

FEATURED STORIES

The tandem of Jamie Asok Villame and Rexel Ryan Fabriga settled for silver in the 3M Springboard (Sync) diving event.

In taekwondo, Jose Anthony Soria came in second-best in the middleweight men’s event while Leigh Anne Nuiguid finished with bronze in the 46 kg female.

Meanwhile, Philippine men’s and women’s kumite team took home silver and bronze medals respectively in karate-do.

The Philippines is expected to bag additional medals to wrap up Monday’s competition.
