San Beda advanced to the championship round of the Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup after a sound beating of Jose Rizal University, 80-64, in the semifinals Friday at the tournament’s namesake arena in San Juan.
Red Lions head coach Boyet Fernandez knew they had to stop one man if they ever hoped of taking down the Heavy Bombers, and that was Teytey Teodoro.
“Teytey is JRU for me, if Teytey plays very well, so will JRU,” said Fernandez. “I took coach Vergel’s [Meneses] message and It was really a motivation for us. If we cannot stop Teytey, we cannot stop JRU.”
Meneses said, before JRU’s semifinals matchup against San Beda, that only he and Teodoro himself can stop the Heavy Bombers’ wingman.
And the Red Lions did manage to limit Teodoro to nine points on 4-of-13 shooting.
Robert Bolick ran the point for San Beda but also did the dirty work as he put up a game-high 22 points to go along six assists while Arnaud Noah had 16 points and six rebounds.
AC Soberano also finished in double digits for San Beda putting up 14 points and going 4-of-5 from beyond the arc.
Ervin Grospe carried the scoring load for JRU with 17 points but labored on a pedestrian 7-of-18 shooting.
