Duterte, Fiba execs meet for World Cup bid

A three-man FIBA (international basketball federation) Evaluation Commission is in the country to inspect facilities the Philippines will use if it succeeds in getting the hosting rights of the 2023 World Cup.

Japan and Indonesia are also bidding as host of the tournament that will serve as qualifier for the 2024 Olympics in Paris. The FIBA central board will bare its choice in December.

“President Duterte is backing the FIBA World Cup hosting bid,” said presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella. “The hosting will have positive impact on basketball and tourism.”

The President met with the FIBA officials, Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas chair emeritus Manny V. Pangilinan and Philippine Sports Commission Chair Butch Ramirez at Manila Hotel.
