Filipinos ride gutsy win over Brunei to historic finale vs SEAG champs

The Philippine polo team made history recently by advancing to the final of the All Asia Cup for the first time at VS Sports Club in Bangkok, Thailand.

Behind the gutsy effort of team captain and Rep. Mikee Romero (1Pacman party-list), the Nationals made their feat doubly significant by beating SEA Games bronze medalist Brunei, 11-7, in the semifinals.

“We finally made it to the final of this prestigious event,” said Romero, who owns the GlobalPort team in the PBA. “It was a great effort; we played hard and smart.”

Other members of the PH team are Anthony Garcia, Adrian Garcia and Ricardo Garcia.

Romero and company dispute the title against SEA Games silver medalist and host Thailand Saturday.

“We hope we can sustain our momentum because Thailand is a tough team. We can’t afford to make many mistakes against the Thai team,” added Romero.

The Nationals made it to the medal round by topping their Group B eliminations that saw them outlast Indonesia, 12-9, before pulling a surprising 9-5 win over China.

Romero said their win over China greatly enhanced their confidence in time for their semifinal showdown with Brunei.

“Our win over China further motivated us to play a lot harder knowing Brunei is a solid team.”
