MANILA, Philippines—Undaunted by his rival’s solid credentials, Filipino rising star Carlo Biado overwhelmed Taiwanese ace Chang Jung-lin, 9-4, Friday night in their Philippine Bigtime Billiards showdown at the Pagcor Airport Casino in Parañaque.
The 27-year-old Biado gave the reigning Japan Open champion little room to operate with his precise pocketing and superb positional plays in their 10-ball showdown to claim the $5,000 purse. The Taiwanese settled for $2,500.
Winner of the BSCP National Pool Championship early this year, Biado was looking to avenge the defeat of his Bugsy Promotions stablemate Roberto Gomez against Chang and he did so emphatically, racing to an early 3-0 lead that he never relinquished under the winners’ break format.
“I really want to get back at him (Chang) for beating Gomez,” said Biado, currently ranked No. 16 in the world. “It’s good that my preparation for the match paid off. This is a good win to celebrate Christmas and New Year.”
It was the La Union native’s first victory in the series that pits some of the finest Filipino cue artists against the best players in the world. Biado lost to German world champion Ralf Souquet, 3-9, in his debut last Nov. 12.
Among the Filipino stars who have played in the series are Dennis Orcollo, who beat Yang Ching-shun after losing to Souquet, Lee Van Corteza, Ronnie Alcano and Francisco “Django” Bustamante.
Wu Chia Ching of China and Filipino pool legend Efren “Bata” Reyes clash on Dec. 30in the series jointly organized by the Mega Sports World and BRKHRD Corporation.
