Alaska’s 89-74 loss to Meralco in the 2018 PBA Commissioner’s Cup didn’t need much explanation from Aces head coach Alex Compton.

There was no need for any quantification of the statistics that surrounded the game as the Aces “just didn’t make shots.”

“We missed so many shots, part of that you got to credit to Meralco but sometimes you get wide open shots and we missed it,” said Compton as his team settled for the second seed with a 7-2 record.

“We missed layups, we missed 12-footers, 15-footers, wide-open threes, and we missed a ton of them. Credit to Meralco we really got outplayed. The ball needs to go to the basket.”

Alaska went 32-of-84 from the field and, two days after exploding for 14-of-24 from deep in a 120-11 win over NLEX, shot just 4-of-22 from downtown.

And the Aces’ 74-point finish was their lowest production this Commissioner’s Cup—a conference where they averaged 109.6 points prior to facing the Bolts.

Compton said their seven-game winning streak before facing the Bolts was bound to stop and that their torrid shooting would inevitably meet its demise.

“It’s not often that you win seven straight, somebody’s going to take you down,” said Compton. “You lose games in the regular season, we still have a lot of work to do if we want to worry about advancing in the playoffs.”

“We had a day where we went 14-of-24 from three against NLEX and now we’re 4-of-22. Sometimes that happens.”
