PetroGazz sweeps Tacloban in PVL opener

PetroGazz got off to a good start in its campaign after setting Tacloban aside, 25-22, 25-14, 26-24, in the opening game of the Premier Volleyball League Open Conference Thursday at Filoil Flying V Centre.

Paneng Mercado led the Angels with 14 points while Mary Ann Mendrez and Ranya Musa had 11 and points, respectively.

Musa, though, was vital in the clutch sending PetroGazz at match point, 25-24, before her kill block on Menchie Tubiera sealed their victory.

Angels head coach Jerry Yee gave almost all of his players playing time as he didn’t want just the core of his squad to bear the brunt of the minutes.

“We wanted to let the others play because we have back-to-back games so it was like a little bit of rest for the other players,” said Yee in Filipino.

There wasn’t much disparity in the teams’ offenses with PetroGazz holding slim leads in spikes, 39-33, and spikes, 4-2, but the Angels made a killing in their blocks with an 11-4 advantage.

Musa led PetroGazz’ aerial blockade with four while Mercado had three.

Heather Guino-o had nine points for the Fighting Warays.
