MANILA—Super featherweight Michael Farenas won by majority decision over former WBO North American Boxing Organization champion and world title challenger Daniel Attah of Nigeria at the Morongo Casino Resort and Spa in Cazazon, California, Saturday night.
Two judges saw the Filipino southpaw the clear winner with Fritz Werner scoring it 79-71 and Fernando Villareal, 78-72. Judge James Jen-Kin, however, scored the fight even, 75-75.
Jen-Kin’s scorecard was surprising since Farenas dropped Attah in round seven and the Nigerian was also deducted a point in round six for continued holding.
With his fifth win in the US, Farenas, protégé of former two-division world champion Gerry Peñalosa, improved his record to 31-3-3, Attah fell to 25-7-1.
Prior to the fight, Peñalosa told the Inquirer that should Farenas, who was trained by Freddie Roach, win impressively, there’s a possibility he would fight world titlist Yuriorkis Gamboa, next.
Meantime, Juanito Rubillar lost his fourth fight in a row when he suffered a 7th round TKO at the hands of WBC Silver super flyweight champion Oscar Ibarra in Puebla, Mexico. Ibarra improved to 27-4 while Rubillar fell to 48-17-7.
