Right direction: ‘Non-losing season’ already an achievement for St. Benilde

College of St. Benilde head coach TY Tang won’t be losing any sleep even if the Blazers would end up missing the Final Four in the NCAA Season 94.

After all, Tang can proudly say the Blazers finished with a winning record, which hasn’t happened since Season 90.

“Having a first non-losing season for us is already an achievement,” Tang told reporters after a 94-81 win over Final Four-bound Letran on Tuesday in the last game of the elimination round.

“I think we were able to finish strong and that’s already a good season for us. I can’t ask anything more from the boys coming from what happened during the mid-second round all the way to today,” he added.

The Blazers wound up with a 10-8 record, more than doubling their win total from last year where they went 4-14 in Tang’s first year at the helm.

Tang said CSB is on the right track. Only a win separated the Blazers from tying University of Perpetual Help for the fourth and last semifinals slot.

Filipino-American rookie Justin Gutang was a revelation for CSB and with the Blazers keeping their core for next year, things would only keep getting better for them.

“I think we are in the right direction in terms of where we want to be. This time, it’s just a maturity or learning experience for us,” Tang said. “We haven’t been in this kind of situation even the vets of this team have not really felt how to play during the second round of the season because every single time as they mentioned to us coaches, they are already thinking about the break.”

“But this time around, as we started off the second round up until the last two games, we were still, in a way, in contention even if it’s out of our control, there’s still possibilities. Hopefully, this is a good learning experience for us to launch for us next season.”
