Adidas manila kicks off 2019 running calendar

Adidas Runners Manila kicked off 2019 with a 5-kilometer run around Bonifacio Global City in Taguig recently.

Members of the running club converged outside the sports apparel and footwear shop located at Two Parkade, the start and finish line of the event that began with participants writing down their fitness resolutions.
“The key to achieving a healthier lifestyle is by starting today, not tomorrow, with like-minded individuals,” said decathlete Jules Aquino, one of the club’s leaders.

National coach and noted triathlete Ani de Leon-Brown is one of the club’s mentors.

Novice runners are specifically urged by the club, which is among the first in the country to try on the lightweight SolarBoost footwear, to join its growing community of fitness enthusiasts. On Jan. 30, a 6K speed run will be held at BGC Greenway Linear Park at 7 p.m. —ROMINA S. AUSTRIA

A passion for triathlon has brought together a sports program that supports national athletes and a prominent events group that brought Ironman to the Philippines.

Go For Gold, also a chief backer of the national cycling, sepak takraw, dragonboat, wrestling and skating teams, and Philippine Ironman franchise holder Sunrise Events, Inc. (SEI) will stage Sunrise Sprint (S2) for three years.

S2 is a short distance triathlon series featuring a 750-meter open water swim, 20-kilometer bike ride and a 5K run.

SEI founder and two-time world Ironman finisher Wilfred Uytengsu said Sunrise Sprint, which debuted in 2016, requires shorter training time but is challenging like all other endurance races.

“The sprint is the shortest distance triathlon and is a great gateway into the sport, easily accessible to newcomers and novices alike,” said Uytengsu during the recent event launch held at Manila House in Taguig. “Sprint is also for lapse triathletes wishing to make a comeback and for young triathletes who have outgrown their age groups but are too young for the more punishing distances.”

Go For Gold chief Jeremy Go, who said triathlon started off his sponsorship-spree, said his long-range plans include staging quality local events.

“It’s expensive to always send athletes abroad but we can have tournaments and events here that can help develop our athletes,” said Go.

Southeast Asian Games defending champion Nikko Huelgas, silver medalist John Chicano and Kim Kilgroe are the triathletes under Go’s wing.
The Go For Gold Sunrise Sprint will kick off with the Naga City, Cebu leg on April 28 coinciding with the Sun Life 5i50.
