MANILA, Philippines—Global needed an 85th-minute penalty from Carli de Murga to overcome Green Archers United, 1-0, Sunday in the United Football League at the Nomads field in Parañaque.
The Fil-Spanish defender struck from the spot after Archers defender Arvin Soliman was called for handball in tapping out Misagh Bahadoran’s goalbound effort. Soliman was also sent off for the infraction.
Global had been reduced to 10 men five minutes earlier when goalkeeper Jerome Sylvain, getting the start ahead of the struggling Paolo Pascual, was given his marching orders for a tackle on Gabriel Oloweyeye outside the area.
But Global’s fortunes quickly turned with increased pressure leading to Soliman’s handball.
Global stayed in fourth with nine points from five matches, while Archers remained in ninth with just a point to show from four matches.
Over at UMak, Pachanga held fort in the second division, coming from behind to edge Dolphins United, 3-2, for its fourth victory.
Robert Canedo scored two goals, including a 25-yard rocket for the game-winner in the 75th minute.
Diliman stayed in second with a 4-1 drubbing of Agila, while Cebu Queen City United posted a stunning 2-0 win over fancied Laos.
De Murga, who had missed a penalty in the exhibition game pitting the national team and a Korean club a few weeks ago, made no mistake this time, striking it low and hard past Martin Villaflor.
Juan Luis Guirado, the brother of Angel Guirado, debuted for Global, coming in midway in the second half.
Archers actually had the better opportunities, but Arnie Pasinabo and Tating Pasilan were both stopped by Sylvain.
