Far Eastern, UE dominate UAAP athletics
MANILA,Philippines—Far Eastern University swept the UAAP men and women’s athletics for the second straight season as a University of the East high school bet also shone in the juniors division.
Dalyn Carmen bannered FEU’s campaign with four gold medals, including a record-breaking run in the 3,000m steeplechase (11:50.62 minutes), to power the Lady Tamaraws to their ninth straight title with 293 points.
The Tamaraws also dominated the men’s division with 188 points to complete their back-to-back triumph, edging University of Santo Tomas (160) and La Salle (144).
UST also settled for a runner-up finish in the women’s side (233), while UE (171) rounded out the top three in the four-day athletics event held recently at the PhilSports Complex.
In juniors action, UE’s Daveson Kyle Narido emerged as the Most Valuable Player after shattering four records in the 1,500m (4:34.49 minutes), 5,000m (17:51.94), 3,000m (10:02.39) and 2,000m steeplechase (7:08.77) aside from picking up a fifth gold in the 800m.
University of the Philippines, though, bagged the juniors crown with 239 points, followed by Ateneo (182) and UST (170).
In women’s volleyball, No. 4 FEU will take on No. 3 University of Santo Tomas (9-5) in the stepladder semifinals starting at 2 p.m. today at the FilOil-Flying V Arena in San Juan.
The winner in the knockout duel will advance on Saturday versus No. 2 Ateneo (11-3), which owns a twice-to-beat semifinal bonus.
A remarkable 14-game elimination sweep by defending champion La Salle paved the way for a stepladder semifinal format.
