MANILA, Philippines—An Olympian is set to cross paths with Philippine national athletes as former Olympian David McKienzie takes his talents to the Beach Volleyball Republic On Tour Ola, Lianga Leg Saturday in Surigao del Sur.
McKienzie, a former All-American while playing for California State University at Long Beach, will play against a stacked field that includes players preparing for the 30th Southeast Asian Games.
“I haven’t played in a tournament since September 2018 so I’m very excited to play,” said McKienzie of the tiff that will be held at Gran Ola Eco Surf Camp. “I have only been to Manila so I’m always excited to go somewhere new. It will be nice to experience another part of the Philippines.”
Cherry Rondina and Bernadeth Pons, who carried the Philippine flag to the quarterfinals of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Boracay in May, will play in Lianga as part of their SEA Games preparations.
McKienzie will also be an ambassador of sorts for beach volleyball after having played in the 2012 London Olympics and several FIVB World Tours.
“I know indoor volleyball is quite popular in the Philippines but I really encourage all players to try beach volleyball,” said McKienzie. “If you’re looking to improve at volleyball then beach volleyball is the best tool by far.”
“It will help you improve all your basic skills and efficiency, improve your physical conditioning and increase your volleyball IQ and mental fortitude.”
McKinzie came from a family of volleyball players with father William representing the US in the Pan American Games and sister Joy suiting up for Long Beach State.
“I always like to be involved with volleyball in one way or another, if I can use my presence to help promote the sport and spark interest then I am definitely up for it,” said McKinzie who’s now married to Malaysian actress Lana Nodin.
