ITF 14-U: Local bets fall to foreign rivals

MANILA, Philippines—Unranked Nethmie Waduge of Sri Lanka stunned No. 7 Ericka Mae Manduriao while three other Filipino bets also bowed out in the first round of the ITF Asia 14-Under Development Championships–Division I tennis tournament at the Rizal Memorial tennis courts Tuesday.

Waduge held off Manduriao’s rally in the second set to complete a 6-3, 7-5 victory and join the romp of foreign bets in the five-day tournament put up by the International Tennis Federation Grand Slam Development Fund.

No. 10 Tzu Hui Chen of Chinese-Taipei survived Ingrid Mariz Gonzales, 7-5, 6-4, while sixth ranked Seon Young Um of Korea swept Maia Balce, 7-5, 6-1.

Hong Kong’s Jacinta Yuan Sze Chen blanked Ma. Dominique Ong, 6-0, 6-0, to also advance.

Daria Shevchenko of Kazakhstan thwarted Korean Seo In Choi, 7-6 (5), 6-2, while third seed Prajala Yadlapalli of India, winner of the Hyderabad leg of the circuit, toppled Kwan Wun Man of Hong Kong, 6-2, 6-1.

Other winners were Napharat Sawangkaew of Thailand, who beat Yus Syazlin Yusri of Malaysia, 6-2, 6-4; Valeriya Popova of Uzbekistan, who outlasted Arrum Damarsari of Indonesia, 7-5, 7-5; and Kamila Umarova, who turned back Nurin Nabila Roslan of Malaysia, 2-6, 7-5, 6-4.
