SEA Games: PH’s Mark Striegl, Chino Sy claim sambo golds

MANILA, Philippines—It was a golden double for the Philippines after Mark Striegl and Chino Sy ruled their respective divisions in the men’s combat sambo competition of the 2019 Southeast Asian Games Thursday.

Striegl dominated Singapore’s Ashvin Jaswant Singh, 8-0, to take the gold medal in the men’s 74-kilogram division.

This was Striegl’s first foray in the regional games while holding an 18-2 record in MMA.

Sy, meanwhile, held off Singapore’s Gary Chow, 4-1, in the men’s 82kg division for the title.

The former UAAP Judo MVP also owns the title in the Southeast Asian Sambo Championship in Bandung, Indonesia.

Patrick Manicad and Jose Rene Mondejar also bagged the bronze medals in the 82kg and 90kg divisions, respectively.
