MANILA, Philippines — Amid the Philippines’ gold rush in the 30th Southeast Asian Games, Filipino boxing champion Jerwin Ancajas gave his countrymen more reasons to celebrate in his own way on Sunday.

Ancajas retained his IBF super flyweight world title after a six-round demolition of Miguel Gonzalez in the co-main event at Auditorio GNP Seguros in Puebla, Mexico.

Ancajas was relentless from the get-go and made target practice out of his Chilean foe on his way to a sixth-round stoppage.

FEATURED STORIES

The 27-year-old Ancajas (32-1-2, 21 KOs) successfully defended his belt for the eighth consecutive time.

His latest win came seven months after stopping Japanese Ryuichi Funai in Stockton, California.

Ancajas set up the impressive finish with a left uppercut that wobbled the 30-year-old Gonzalez, who then took more punishment as he fought for survival while being pinned against the ropes before the referee stepped in to stop the bout.
