Rookie karter Brian Thorp makes his mark

/ 01:02 AM March 18, 2012

Brian Thorp isn’t your typical rookie.

Only 13 years old and already a lanky 5-foot-7, Brian showed glimpses of his vast potential by ruling the novice cadet class of the 2011 Petron National Karting Series Open Championship right on his first year.

Brian, eldest child of Filipino beauty Ginny and British businessman Jonathan, collected his first trophy during the recent 2011 Golden Wheels awards.

A multi-sports athlete who is also into basketball, volleyball, rugby, swimming and diving, Brian surprised the karting community by displaying almost effortless skill.

“He’s a smooth driver. He doesn’t get rattled,” says Ginny.

Brian, a 7th grader at Brent International in Laguna, only joined the series in its third leg but dominated the next five legs to win the series with 301 points.

Brian credited the support given by Howzat Sports Bar, Savoy Bistro, Von Dutch, Big Apple Dive Resort, Team Insider Boxing Gym, Mulligans Irish Bar and Olympic medalist Onyok Velasco.

Brian’s resumes his bid in the series next weekend.

“I need to be more focused because this is going to be a tougher race,” he said.
