Filipino athletes will be quarantined two weeks ahead of their scheduled Olympic qualifying events to ensure that no transmission of the new coronavirus would take place—that is if those shelved qualifiers will ever take place at all.
Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chief of staff Marc Velasco said the agency has strongly considered isolating the athletes in areas where they would see action 14 days prior to their respective tournament schedules.
“It was part of the discussion for athletes who are seeking to qualify for the Olympics,’’ Velasco said.
“We might send them two weeks ahead to the qualifying tournament for quarantine procedures,’’ added the national training director of the Philippine Sports Institute under the PSC.
A total of 62 Filipino athletes from 18 sports will still go through the process of qualifying to the Tokyo Summer Games scheduled on July 24-Aug. 9. INQ
