MANILA, Philippines—Athletes who have called ABS-CBN their home paid their respects to the network that once became their platform to display not only their talents but also their charisma that captivated thousands.
ABS-CBN on Thursday announced it is shutting down its sports arm amid massive layoffs at the network following the denial of the renewal of franchise by the House of Representatives.
The likes of Alyssa Valdez, Denden Lazaro, and Ayel Estrañero all expressed their thanks to the channel that became the catalyst for their careers.

“Kasama ko sa pagtupad ng aking mga pangarap, maraming salamat (You’ve been with me when I realized my dream, thank you so much) @abscbnsports,” posted Valdez on Twitter.
“I honestly can’t put into words what I exactly feel right now. But to @abscbnsports, thank you so much for all the opportunities you’ve given me. I wouldn’t be the athlete I am today if not for you,” posted Ayel Estrañero, who once served as captain of University of the Philippines.

ABS-CBN, through Studio 23 and eventually Sports and Action, broadcasted the UAAP and NCAA for decades, giving a platform to collegiate sports and launching it to mainstream consciousness.
Sports commentators like Boom Gonzalez also became a household name just like the personalities he covered on a weekly basis.
