MANILA, Philippines — Larry Fonacier is gearing up for a comeback in the PBA after being sidelined for a year.
NLEX head coach Yeng Guiao, in an interview with PBA.ph, said Fonacier is in the process of getting ready for the rigors of the league after the 38-year-old shooter begged off from joining the team in the 2020 Philippine Cup.
Fonacier’s contract with the Road Warriors also expired at the end of the season.
“He’s getting himself into the right condition,” said Guiao in Filipino. “He’s hoping to be back in the second conference (Governors’ Cup).”
“He was gone for one year so he’s trying to gauge himself and if he can still make a contribution to the team.”
Fonacier played just 10 games combined in the first two conferences of the 2019 season but had 13 games under his belt come the Governors’ Cup where he had his best performance shooting-wise.
The 6-foot-2 wingman shot close to 40 percent from the field and 35.5% from deep for 3.5 points a game wherein he usually came off the bench for the Road Warriors.
Guiao, however, warned Fonacier that a roster spot won’t be assured even if he does manage to get in proper shape.
If Fonacier can’t crack the 15-man lineup, though, then the former Gilas player will have a place in Guiao’s staff or even within the NLEX office.
“Actually, I told him to try to get back and try to be in shape,” said Guiao. “His physical capabilities did deteriorate and he has to build that up.
“We can find ways for him to make a contribution. Either as part of the coaching staff or in the corporate setting.”
