Third-seeded German Alexander Zverev crashed out of the Miami Open on Friday, falling in his opening match to 83rd-ranked Finn Emil Ruusuvuori 1-6, 6-3, 6-1.
Zverev, coming off his first title of the season at Acapulco last week, got off to a strong start, breaking Ruusuvuori three times in dominating the first set.
But the 21-year-old Finn responded and Zverev, ranked seventh in the world, seemed to run out of steam.
Ruusuvuori next faces Sweden’s Mikael Ymer, who beat Nikoloz Basilashvili of Georgia 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
