MANILA, Philippines—Tryouts for the national volleyball team are set for the end of this month as the Philippine National Volleyball Federation sent out invites to athletes who could suit up for the indoor and beach teams.

The tryouts for the men and women’s teams for the indoor competition will take place on April 28 and 29 at Subic Gym while the trials for the beach volleyball squads will be on April 30 at Subic Tennis Courts.

Both tryouts will be held in a bubble environment.

“The PNVF is currently prioritizing its elite/high-performance initiatives through the National Team Commission,” said PNVF President Ramon “Tats” Suzara. “The national team will be focusing on the 31st Southeast Asian Games in Hanoi in December.”

Those who will enter the bubble, from coaches, players, organizers, and staff, will undergo an RT-PCR test 48 hours before the tryouts with a guaranteed turnaround time of 24 hours.

“These tryouts are needed in order for the athletes to be at their optimal condition prior to key competition events this year,” said Suzara who, along with PNVF Secretary General Donaldo Caringal and Medical Commission head Dr. Jose Raul Canlas, met with the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority and Philippine Red Cross to finalize the health protocols.

National coaches Arthur “Odjie” Mamon (volleyball women), Dante Alinsunurin (volleyball men), Paul Jan Doloiras (beach volleyball women) and Rhovyl Verayo (beach volleyball men) will supervise the tryouts.

The Philippines went on a medal haul during the 2019 SEA Games with the men’s indoor team taking the silver and the two beach volleyball squads both winning bronze.
