MANILA, Philippines—The Philippine National Volleyball Federation’s tryouts for the volleyball and beach volleyball teams came to an end on Friday with the sand courts of Subic hosting the hopefuls.

Sisi Rondina, Bernadeth Pons, Dzi Gervacio, Dij Rodriguez, Jude Garcia, Jaron Requinton and James Buytrago, the bronze medal winners in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games, led the tryouts along with the other hopefuls.

A total of 21 women and 21 men heeded the call for the tryouts including former SEA Games captain Jovelyn Gonzaga who signified her intention to play for the country’s beach volleyball team.

“This goes to show that volleyball—and sports in general, for that matter—is eager to make a comeback amid the pandemic,” said PNVF President Ramon “Tats” Suzara. “We completed three days of tryouts and the turnout of aspirants breached expectations.”

DM Demontaño and Jackie Estoquia, who represented the Philippines in international club competitions, were also invited but could not make the tryouts as they’re under quarantine after getting in close contact with a COVID-19 positive coach.

Khylem Harl Progella, Alexa Polidario, Erjane Magdato, Babylove Barbon, Princess Robles, Honey Grace Cabansay, Jennifer Cosas, Tin Tiamzon, Javen Sabas, Gen Eslapor, and Mer Jauculan showed up for the women’s seniors tryouts.

Those who joined the juniors program for the women’s team are Roma Mae Doromal, Grydelle Joanice Matibag, Khylem Harl Progella and Samantha Maranan.

Anthony Arbasto, Edwin Tolentino, Ranran Abdilla, Ronald Umang-it, Joven Camaganakan, AJ Pareja, Jade Becaldo, Calvin Sarte, James Pecaña, Jason Uy, Philip Bagalay and Joshua Miña made up the men’s seniors aspirants.

Pol Salvador, Rancel Varga, Dominique Gabito, Efraem Dimaculangan, Jay Rack Dela Noche and Alexander Iraya were the ones who filled in the tryout roster for the men’s juniors.
